Into the storm is a short story written by Jerry Ellis. The narrator is forty-one years old and decides to walk the Trail of Tears in the middle of a storm, even after a traumatic experience with lightning. He was four years old when his house had been struck by lightning. His father, a carpenter, put out the fire in the attic but fell through the ceiling, landing on top of the piano and onto the floor. Ever since then he was afraid of storms and he remembers the times in fourth grade when he hid behind a couch every time there was a storm. He pushed through all the terrible memories and continued to walk the 900 miles with a fifty pound backpack on his bag. The Trails of Tears happened in the middle of winter in 1838. When a driver stopped his station wagon and told him to get in. The narrator said he couldn’t, he was walking the Trail of Tears.
